Your FAFSA Checklist: Gather Everything First
A smooth application starts here. Gather these items for yourself (the student) and all other 'contributors' (like your parents) before you log in.
💡 Academic Transcripts vs. Financial Documents
FSA IDs for ALL Contributors
The student, parent(s), and any required spouse each need their own separate FSA ID. This acts as your electronic signature.
Pro Tip:
Create your FSA ID at studentaid.gov at least 3-5 days before you start the FAFSA, as it needs to be verified.
Social Security Numbers
The SSN for the student and all contributors is required. If you don't have an SSN, you may still be able to complete the FAFSA.
2023 Federal Income Tax Information
Have your 2023 tax returns (like IRS Form 1040) on hand. While the IRS data exchange tool (FA-DDX) will import the data directly, you may need to confirm details.
Records of Untaxed Income & Assets
This includes child support received in 2023, and current balances of cash, savings, and checking accounts.
Investment & Business Records
You'll need the current net worth of investments, including stocks, bonds, and real estate (other than your primary home), as well as the net worth of any family-owned businesses or farms.
